FREE workshop exploring drawing portraits of children

The Thrive Archive workshop‘The weans just won’t sit still!’ Despite the lure of thruppence for the cinema or a new comic to read Joan’s young models found it difficult to hold a pose for long. She had to work fast and if you have ever tried to draw your children or your grandchildren you will understand the challenges Joan faced trying to capture a fleeting expression or a shy smile.

Join artists from The Thrive Archive for a 90-minute workshop ‘After Eardley’ and explore the joy of drawing portraits of children at speed. Simply bring a photo of a ‘wee one’ to inspire you and an old shirt or apron to wear. The 90-minute workshops are free and we provide all the materials.

Henry Fraser visits Lorna’s Art Class

Dear all,

henry-fraserLast session we looked at the work of Henry Fraser, an Edinburgh based artist, currently working out of Edinburgh Palette. Known for his pared down and abstracted figures or portraits, Henry tries to convey the mystery and transience of the human conditions, making the invisible, visible.

Having prepared a canvas with a base layer of paint the mini artists used Henry’s paintings and their own faces as a starting point. (Looking in the mirrors and giggling lots!) After getting some ideas down in pencil they used oil pastels to blend colours and try and capture something of themselves. Then in a wonderful moment of serendipity Henry was just walking past and popped in to see what the children were doing. I do believe he rather liked what he saw!

Enjoy half term and pop into the open studio event on 22nd/23rd October, where there are lots of free activities for adults & kids.

Alice Boyle visits the Wednesday Advanced Art Class

Alice Boyle visits the Wednesday Advanced Art ClassDear all,

Last session we looked again at the work of the Scottish painter Alice Boyle but this week we had the lady herself to answer our questions. She spoke about how she worked and worked with the children as they turned their designs into paintings. She showed us layering colour and how to work with our hands as well as brushes. We all agreed it was much more fun having the actual artist with us, if a little intimidating. The wee artists were a little shy and over awed but deeply impressed!

Now in it’s second year, The Neverending Glen returns to The Kelburn Garden Party, taking guests on a surreal, enchanting and stimulating multi-media adventure, where contemporary art meets ancient landscape. Once again artists and art collectives, many of whom are residents at Edinburgh Palette, will be invited to create site-specific installations, sculptures, performances and events, to enhance the audience’s experience of the amazing Kelburn Estate with it’s magical and ancient forestry, mesmerizing views over the Atlantic and astounding location on the west coast. This year’s Neverending Glen will see its collaboration grow through a co-curation between Sophia Lindsay Burns from art hub Edinburgh Palette and The Too Much Fun Club.
