News News Featured Opportunity | Artist in Residence Schools

Lorna Macdonald who is the Principal Officer for Creative Learning at City of Edinburgh Council has an exciting opportunity for an Artist in Residence at Craigmount High School in Corstorphine.

Overview

The idea is that an artist would be given a placement as an Artist in Residence at the School for at least 6 weeks. Craigmount is very open and flexible as to the amount of time for the placement so it could be for 6 weeks or for longer and it could be for an entire academic year.  The school is happy for there to be two Artists in Residence on placement at the same time working in tandem.

Details:

  •  Visual art focus rather than music or drama.
  • Facilities are available for painting, ceramics, jewellery and fashion. There is also the opportunity to use the CDT department including wood and metal workshop as well as IT suites, 3D printer and laser cutter available if desired.
  • There would be no payment or costs involved in this opportunity. The A-I-R and the school community would gain from each other (in terms of skills, experience, partnership working, inspiration and professional learning for example) with no charge for use of space or facility but no payment either.
  • The A-I-R would need to provide their own materials for the making of their own work but the school would cover costs of materials for the school project that the A-I-R becomes involved in.

There are two rooms available for the Artist in Residence:

Room 1 – Classroom space but wood and metal kit could be made available

Room 2 – Classroom with ceramics area and a kiln.

The shaping of the school project is something to evolve in partnership between the A-I-R and the school staff as it is not prescribed but the school are keen for it to fit the artist/s and the school. The A-I-R would also have scope to protect time for their own work during their time in the school; again this is up to negotiation to suit.

School Requirements

The Artist in Residence would be at the School regularly, by arrangement, so that staff and pupils are able to watch the process and practice over a period of time and the A-I-R would be willing to talk to the students and staff about what they are doing, how and why.

The A-I-R would participate in a School-wide project.  A teacher would lead the practical part but the A-I-R would make a contribution to the project – so that the young people, the A-I-R and the staff at the School would all be involved.

Benefits

This is an innovative project which would give experience relevant to for example going on to teach or for those who plan to engage with community learning, an ideal opportunity to work in the supportive and co-operative environment provided by the School.  It is an ideal opportunity to develop as an artist and to share knowledge of own practice with staff and young people at the School.

Ideally it would be good to have someone (or some people) in place before the end of the School year so that the prospective Artist-in-Residence can go to the School before the summer break and meet staff and students.

If you would like to know more, Lorna would be very happy to chat to you and give you more details.
