This Family sewing day for adults and children will teach you how to use a sewing machine and learn some basic sewing skills. Then there’s a lovely project to sew to practise your new skills. Please book 1 place per pair (1 adult & 1 child aged 8-15.
I learned to sew around the age of 7, on my mum’s Singer machine (it would now be referred to as a ‘vintage’ Singer). Some of my happiest memories are those evenings I spent sewing with Mum. I’d love to get families participating in crafts together again, and forming family bonds. Kids love to learn to sew but they will need support at home which is why I’ll be teaching parents too. This easy upcycling project will show you the value in existing fabrics harvested from used clothing.
What’s included:
- How to use a sewing machine safely and confidently
- Practice sewing straight lines, curves and corners
- Make a patchwork cushion from upcycled denim jeans
- Sewing machines, and equipment provided (but you can bring your own if you have any)
- I am insured and hold a PVG (Disclosure Scotland) certificate
Sewing is a fantastic activity for children. It assists in developing good hand/eye co-ordination, manual dexterity, stimulates the creative imagination and aids in project planning. It gives a sense of achievement and self-worth. I believe that it’s such an important life skill that all children should learn – girls and boys. And if they can sew alongside Mum or Dad, then that’s even more fun. The Family sewing day will let you learn crafting skills together.
