A. A. Paton. Biography

I spent my most of my adult life living in Thurso, Caithness, where I taught at the Thurso campus of the University of the Highlands and Islands.

In 2010 I left to study Fine Art at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen as a mature student and graduated with a BA (Hons.) painting in 2014. After graduating, I moved to Edinburgh where I was invited to show as a recent graduate at the RSW’s 134th annual exhibition. I returned to the RSW and exhibited in their 135th exhibition where I was presented with the RSW Watermark award. I also exhibited in their 136th, 137th and more recently their 142nd show in 2023.

In January 2018 I was selected for the “SSA & VSA together” in Edinburgh where my piece entitled ‘Entropy’ was awarded the Deloitte prize for an artwork of merit. I have further exhibited in many group and solo shows since graduating. Although I moved back to my home in Caithness in 2018, I continue to exhibit in Edinburgh.

My work focuses on the concept of erasure, using newspapers and other publications. My technique begins with a reductive process, excising text and images so that only the basic scaffolding of a newspaper remains. For some of the pieces I have developed the process further by taking this fragile structure and distorting it, before building up multiple layers and reconfiguring them to make my own canvas. This canvas is not a flat surface, but ruff and undulating.. Just as the original newspaper or magazine was read, and variously interpreted by its readers, so this transformed ‘text’ is presented to be read and reinterpreted.
