Graduate Studies - Leith School of Art. Studio Access: Six days per week.

Leith School of Art’s Graduate Studies offers a unique opportunity to study full-time within an established Art School to advance your practice from undergraduate study and develop a substantial body of new work. This work could then be used to apply to MA courses in the UK. Leith has excellent connections with leading art institutions. Each graduate will benefit from a dedicated studio space, available at all times during School opening hours allowing for flexibility of working practice and the scope to embark on a new body of work. Students will be encouraged to use the Graduate Studies course to develop an ambitious proposal challenging previous undergraduate or current practice. Students will gain from scheduled individual tutorials with their personal tutor, visits and workshops by artists or designers, group critique and a series of contextual and critical seminars. They will receive critical feedback on their work and learn how to situate their practice in the wider context of the contemporary art world. Students will have a personal tutor who oversees their development throughout the year, all tutors are established artists.

COURSE STRUCTURE

Students will engage with a rigorous proposal for study, which deals with art or design practice, outlining focused critical enquiry and personal contextual research. There will be fortnightly tutorials with their personal tutor and a programme of visiting lecturers. This structure will promote dialogue, raise questions and create important links with external agencies. On occasions there will be gallery visits and professional consultation from visiting artists. One day per week will be spent on the Critical and Professional Development course, which is structured around seminars in professional practice. Seminars will discuss personal practice, liaising with galleries and collectors, building a support network, developing an online presence, managing time and money, collaborating with others working in a similar field and developing a greater critical awareness of their own practice. Students will be encouraged to develop an online research portfolio including an archive of recent works and relevant written texts. This portfolio will be available for peers and tutors and may be adapted at the end of the course to become an online portfolio. At scheduled dates, the work produced will be presented for progress reviews and formative assessment with constructive feedback. At the culmination of the study, students will present their work for assessment followed by a selected exhibition.

Core hours are Monday to Friday 9.30am – 4.30pm, however, students have access to their studio space at all times during School opening hours, six days a week. We are looking for ambitious, hard working artists, who will enter into the community of Leith School of Art.
