leith police anjLeith based Anjila Wilson is an ECA student who has created works of art from pieces of industrial debris and waste excavated from Shrubhill.   Her work has been shown at the RSA and Roseneath bar.

Anjila has created new artwork consisting of photographs of Leith, recorded memories of Leithers accompanied by music by resident Martin Metcalfe and Paul Hullah which will take place in Leith Walk police box in April 13 – 17 2015.

Collecting and storing memories whether in object form or information based has become the root core of my art practice.

As I walk, I feel the history underneath my feet with my eyes drawn to the spaces and buildings around me.  I am interested in the memories they hold and the memories we hold.  I often give much thought to the generations who have walked these grounds before me.

I have a particular interest in Leith and I often wonder what stories could be told if Leith could speak.  For months now, I have walked the ground of Leith engaging with the environment and the history that surrounds me.  Involvement with the locals is an important process for me, as I feel this keeps me true to my purpose, grounded and gives me a true account of my surroundings and its memories.

For this reason, I intend to use the police box (Leith Walk) to gather memories from Leithers and use the box as a place for interactive learning and research.  So I will have photos that I have taken of Leith in the last few months and I hope that this will trigger memories from the viewer.   Perhaps recording and photographing the person if permitted.

Leith Walk Police box is on Croall Place, EH7 4LT.  The final artwork (WHO’s Leith and WHO’s voice) will be on display in Leith Walk police box 13-17 April, 10am – 4pm daily. Admission is free.
