Rendition Preview

Invitation To Edinburgh Palette

I would like to invite you to a preview launch of Rendition, a radical new work from Tragic Carpet Visual Theatre Company – Friday 13th September in Edinburgh, 10.30am-12.20pm.

Rendition is a potent and immersive installation which uses detailed, up-to-the-minute academic research findings from The Rendition Project to tell the story of one man’s nightmare experience as the first suspect to be taken into the CIA’s detention programme. Freda O’Byrne, artistic director and sole performer, uses an innovative mix of puppetry, soundscapes and theatre to visualise the human rights violations committed by US and UK governments in the aftermath of 9/11 – and explores the juxtaposition between extreme vulnerability and absolute power. See the trailer here.

In partnership with Freedom From Torture Edinburgh, the preview event will provide the opportunity to visit the installation within the gallery, meet the creative team and view the accompanying immersive performance. Tickets are limited so please register here.

“…a profoundly moving piece of total theatre… beautiful, exquisitely made show driven by a quiet but fierce sense of humanity and compassion”

Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman ★★★★

“At a time when we await the outcome of a Scottish police investigation into the use of Scottish airports for rendition, and after the UK Intelligence and Security Committee published a devastating report into the extent of British involvement in torture, many issues remain unresolved”

Professor Ruth Blakeley, The Rendition Project (It is anticipated that Professor Blakeley will be able to attend the preview and discuss these issues.)

Rendition will tour Scotland in autumn 2020. The performance is ideal for galleries, community spaces, studios and exhibition spaces, and can work in theatres too. Please get in touch for more information.

Clown teacher comes to Edinburgh for the first time

Explore what it feels like to put judgement to one side and develop the confidence to follow your impulses, turn up your curiosity, play more and connect deeply and authentically with yourself and others.

Holly Stoppit has been delivering clowning workshops for adults in Bristol, South West England & Wales, for more than a decade. She is incredibly excited to be bringing her Introduction to Clowning weekend to Scotland for the first time ever this October.

Holly Stoppit grew up on the road with her family’s circus-theatre company, Arts Play Umbrella, performing and delivering circus-theatre workshops all around the UK. She started directing devised performance in her 20s, and soon after that started teaching clown classes to people from all walks of life. Holly’s deep fascination for the transformational potential of creative process led her to study for an MA in Dramatherapy. Now she combines her skills to playfully nurture clowns and fools in all manner of ways.

The Introduction to Clowning is a 2-day workshop which gently immerses you into the state of clown, where everything is possible and nothing is quite as it seems. The workshop will be at St Margaret’s House in Edinburgh, 19 & 20 October. Apply by 13 September.

“A masterclass in being human.”

“It’s about getting in touch with your internal playful child self, getting creative and having fun but doing so mindfully, so you look after the bit of you that could feel vulnerable/shameful in being so daft.”
