Handmade Chelsea – Open Call for Makers & Artists

We feel it’s important for you to have events to look forward to later in the year, just as we are looking forward to Handmade Chelsea – The Contemporary Craft and Design Fair (13 – 15 November). As a direct selling event taking place just six weeks before Christmas, Handmade Chelsea continues to celebrate the best in high-end design and craftsmanship. Overcoming this challenge together we are seeking over 100 highly-skilled, international and UK-based makers.

Working at the moment is not easy so from selection in May we will start to work with you over the coming spring and summer months. As spaces are highly sought-after in each discipline, we would strongly encourage applying early before the deadline of Thursday 30 April.

Apply – Visit handmadeinbritain.co.uk/chelsea for full details on how to apply and to complete the online application form.

Promoting you

“Our plans are taking shape but we need your help”

Following our last email “A Creative Call to Arms”, we have received a fantastic response (keep them coming). We plan to run with your idea of invigorating the Edinburgh Palette website and for it to become more interactive and LIVE connecting residents with the community and bringing your ideas, classes and virtual galleries to life and this is where we need your help…

For those who want to jump on this, can we draw your attention to the Residents Directory feature of our website. This is the perfect time to update all of your information. If you do not have a login, please contact Carly. Alternatively during this difficult time, we can upload the information for you. Please use this drop-box.

To help get us started, please send us images and videos of everything you are involved in and want to show the world via this LINK and we will do our best to promote these for you. The more uptake we get on this the more resources we can develop and improve it. Get involved!

If there is anything we can do in terms of provision or guidance, please get in touch!
For photography assistance, please contact Daniel: 1danieldabrowski@gmail.com
For technical assistance, please contact Clooti: clooti@edinburghpalette.co.uk
For more general communication queries, please contact Carly: carly@edinburghpalette.co.uk

For those of you who are not fully tech savvy, stay posted as we are looking to use our resources to provide 1:1 training so that you learn new skills and can join in.

On a separate note, if your email address changes please ensure you communicate this to us, it is extremely important during these times, that we hold an up-to-date email address for all tenants. Additionally if you sublet your studio, please take the responsibility to pass on our communications and get them to send their email address to Carly.

Audacious Women Festival 2020

The 5th Audacious Women Festival will be held in Edinburgh on 20 – 23 February 2020.

The Festival, which encourages and supports women to Do What You Always Wish You Dared, includes a wide range of workshops offering women an opportunity to try out something new in a safe, supportive space. They range from the Art of Batik, through creative writing, to a Rope Access taster session.  There are two full day workshops:  Silver Jewellery, Jewellery in Action where, as well as learning how to make your own silver pendant, you will have an opportunity to hear about how jewellery can be used for social good. And secondly, Freda O’Byrne, Artistic Director of Tragic Carpet, (based in St Margaret’s House, EH7 6AE) is running an all day Visual Theatre workshop, and will introduce some exercises and games with the emphasis on fun and  mutual support. There will also be talks, exhibitions,  theatre and musical performances celebrating audacious women.

Full details can be found here!

Theatre Workshop for Women

Led by Freda O’Byrne, Artistic Director of Tragic Carpet as part of the Audacious Women Festival

Location: City Arts Centre Friday 21st February 10.30 to 16.30 £45

No drama, no texts but a lot of fun! We will get to know each other through theatre games and exercises with the emphasis on fun, mutual support and curiosity. Participants will learn about visual performance by working together supportively in groups and solo, exploring ideas through subtle movement exercises, improvising around themes and placing our work within the space in different ways. Prior experience is not necessary but it is also welcome. The most important thing to bring along is yourself!

This workshop is focussed on process and not on an end result, leaving us free to play with ideas and see where they go. We will be exploring creative exercises in a light and playful way, shaping the day to match where our enthusiasm runs.

Link Living Bake Sale

On Friday the 6th of December Link Living are hosting a bake sale at their 3rd floor office (next to the library) in St Margaret’s House between 3pm and 5pm.

All goods will be baked and served by their volunteers who are vulnerable young people between the ages of 16-25 who used to or still engage with support at LinkLiving, and who now also help us with our courses, peer education and mentoring in schools and other events.

All of the money raised will be used to pay for training, events and other things that will help the personal development of their young people.

Pop along for some tasty afternoon treats!

Christmas Makers’ Market Pop-Up Exhibition

5th December – drop off works to the gallery

6th – setup (Marcin will curate and hang all the artworks)

7th – the market and exhibition open to audience from 11am until 5pm

8th – all works need to be collected

Each artist will have to prepare their own labels with name, title, medium and price. Each artist can bring 2-3 pieces, however Marcin can’t guarantee that all of them will be showcased (depending on how much space will be available). The exhibition is a good opportunity for artists to promote their art so I would encourage everyone to have business cards next to their works with contact details. In case of any purchase artists will have to deal directly with the customer.  It’s a good opportunity to talk to potential clients. We don’t take any percentage from sales and there’s no fees for participation. The exhibition is for the tenants only. For any questions artists should contact Marcin via email or pop in to the office.

We require volunteers to help with the invigilation of both galleries, please get in touch if this is something you would be interested in.
