Workshops Arts Watercolour Portraits Class with award winning portrait artist Aine Divine

Wednesday 14 May 2014 10:00am - 4:00pm

This workshop will be an investigation of the process of painting a portrait in watercolour. Looking at work by Andrew Wyeth, Sargent, Jenny Saville and other well-known watercolour painters, the possibilities presented by the medium will be explored.

Working from direct observation of the model, in a general way to begin with, students will be encouraged to fix the larger forms first, and apply the paint in a more considered way as time goes on.

Aine will demonstrate ways of using watercolour paint for example lifting off, washing away, flooding parts with colour, and drawing with the brush over dry paint, tilting the board to make use of runs and drips. She will outline the many uses of the flat one inch brush, from blocking in wide areas of tone, to defining edges.

The features will be broken down into simple shapes, the emphasis here will be on fixing the position of the eyes nose and mouth first, then Aine will show how they can emerge gradually as part of the face rather than seem to be applied on top.

Watercolour paper included, brushes available to borrow, please bring your own palette and paints (including; viridian green/ alizarin crimson/ lemon yellow/ ultramarine blue/cadmium red/burnt umber)
