What if stillness in the life room is only a context, like silence is to music?

Alan McGowan’s expressive life paintings explore the relationship between our perceptions, the movement of life all around and the attempt to encapsulate it in the language of paint. “Unstill Life” is both an exhibition of paintings and the launch of a new book of McGowan’s work.

Alan McGowan is an artist and teacher based in Edinburgh, Scotland.  His expressive figure paintings have featured in many exhibitions of contemporary figurative art including the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery in London,  The Threadneedle Award for Figurative Art, the Ruth Borchard self portrait exhibition and the Royal Scottish Academy.
