If you used to sew but have got a bit rusty, then this 1-day sewing workshop will be a useful refresher to brush up your sewing and dressmaking techniques. I’ll take you through some common sewing tasks that you’ll need if you’d like to start sewing again, and throw in all the tips I’ve learned in my sewing experience.

Level 2: Beginners – Improvers. You should have done some sewing before but need a reminder of the foundation techniques.

Who is this aimed at?

Anyone who needs to refresh their sewing techniques. If you need a reminder of how to thread your machine, wind bobbins and understand sewing machine tension. Or you could consider one of my Beginners courses which are covers these topics and many attendees are taking them as a refresher.

What will I learn?

I’ll take you through some common sewing tasks that you’ll need if you’d like to start dressmaking again. Plus there’s plenty of my tips to help you achieve a professional finish to your dressmaking projects.

The Refresher Sewing Class will cover:

  • a reminder of how to thread your machine and wind bobbins
  • how to sew neat, accurate seams
  • different seam types and when to use them
  • how to take up hems
  • various methods of neatening raw edges
  • trimming and pressing
  • edgestitching and topstitching to create impact.
  • how to sew in a zip
  • how to make buttonholes using your sewing machine

The list above are all common dressmaking techniques if you want to achieve a neat-looking finish to your sewing projects.  You may have forgotten how to do these, or perhaps you haven’t learned these before? In addition, if there’s a technique that you can’t seem to get to grips with, then please let me know in advance of the class, and I’ll try to cover it if there’s time.  You will make samples of most of these techniques, and will have notes to take away so you will be able to use these as a reference for your future sewing.

In addition, I’ll tell you about how to choose the best needle for your sewing project, the different types of thread you can use etc, and lots of other information that you’ll need to start sewing again.

Course arrangements

All materials are supplied. Sewing machines are available but you may prefer to bring your own. If so, please bring your accessories (presser feet), bobbins, and the instruction manual. Please also check that you have your power cable/foot control. You’ll need a notebook, and a pair of small embroidery scissors for trimming.
