Rags to Riches

Rags to Riches  – creative textile upcycling is its most glamorous. Learn two easy ways to make your own unique fabrics from scraps. This is a real stash-busting workshop. Bring any pieces of fabrics and trims you have; the glitzier, the better.

What’s included:
• how to repurpose old clothing, household textiles, and scraps of trimmings,
• use the utility stitches of a basic sewing machine for decorative effects
• learn how to use metallic transfer foils to add a bit of bling.
• use free-motion embroidery to make a gorgeous quilted fabric
• gain ideas how you can use your new fabrics as cushion panels, evening bags or notebook covers.

Rags to Riches is a ‘techniques’-based workshop. You will learn two different ways to make new fabrics using some simple textile design methods. I’ll show you examples of items I’ve made using these fabrics so you can get some ideas how to use your fabrics.

Uses for your embroidered fabrics:
The fabrics also make lovely cards, jewellery or to cover gift boxes. If you have any scraps of fabrics, ribbons, trims, or old clothes you’d like to use, then please bring them along. Small colourful print patterns work well, as do satins, velvets, lace and brocade to add a touch of luxury. These techniques are perfect for creating a ‘memory quilt’ or a ‘memory cushion’. So you could bring along old clothing from your children or another family member. Why not use Gran’s blouse or silk scarves, or Dad’s favourite tie?

Sewing machines and materials are provided. If you bring your own machine, you’ll also need a darning/free-motion embroidery foot.

This workshop is run by Jen Skedd of Artisan Stitch.  Jen is a lifelong sewist and trained Textile Designer/Artist.

Level: Improvers onwards (Basic sewing machine experience required)
Duration: 10am-4pm
