An exhibition of selected work by recent graduate of Gray’s School of Art, Wouda Thompson. The work explores visual perception as a conscious experience and our expression of this experience. Through observational painting and drawings of carefully constructed still lives of abstract sculptures the show aims to question the line drawn between perception and interpretation

Visual perception for those able to utilise it is the foundation of all consciousness. It is like all other senses however a mere “tool” with which we interpret our immediate surroundings. We know how light works and that it is absorbed through waves passed on to the retina and then translated through neurons to the brain.

The real mystery is the method by which our minds decipher waves of light into tangible images through which we are able to physically respond to outside stimulus. With a large margin for error it is inevitable that our individual experiences of the world may differ from one each other, both in terms of meaning and emotional value.

My work aims to bring to light the ambiguity that is enforced by the misunderstanding that is caused by the ever-judging mind. In my own opinion on aesthetic preferences and method of interpreting visual information. With this in mind I seek to create work that challenges perceptions in subtle ways. Through still lives that depict abstract objects in stilted, often staged positions and lighting. These images are created by rejecting the notion that realism is the ultimate truth..
