Mad World: Repeat Prescription
Saturday 30 September - Sunday 15 October 2017 10:00am - 8:00pm
St Margaret's House

Preview event: Friday 29th September from 6:30pm

An art and knowledge exhibition revealing some of the history of the democratic psychiatry movement which has challenged human rights abuses over decades and changed the way we understand what madness means.

This is an exhibition about everything that does not get said about madness…. In a time where perception about mental health is going through a sea change, the ideas like ‘madness’ being a chemical imbalance which can be fixed by a pill are being challenged by bodies of evidence which demand that people are listened to about what they know about themselves.
The exhibition invites people to come along and have a look at some of the histories and controversies, the social imbalances and critical discoveries in how ‘madness’ is perceived.  Celebrating 30 years of Asylum Magazine for democratic psychiatry, a landmark forum for critical perspectives in this area, the exhibition brings together artists, scholars, psychiatric survivors and activists to show some of the issues which are less often mentioned in the mainstream views.
Following the famous Rosenhan experiment, the public are invited along to answer the riddle “who in this art gallery is mad?” as creative work (anonymous and otherwise) is displayed along with a library of critical thinking in the area of Mad Studies.  Come view the art of madness, discover the histories which speak of all our civil liberties and think about what futures are to come.
