Why children should learn to sew:

I learned to use a sewing machine when I was 7 years old, and was making clothes at around 11. At age 8-12, children have the mental capacity to learn the basic concepts and sufficient manual dexterity to operate a sewing machine. It’s actually the perfect age at which to learn. The Kids Sewing Course level 1 contains 5 structured lessons. Each introducing another basic sewing skill building on the day before. Each day offers another easy sewing project that children love! Because they’re having such a great time, they don’t actually realise how many valuable sewing skills they are learning which will stay with them for life.

Knowing how to sew is a useful life skill with long term practical applications. But for children, its importance in aiding mental and physical development is astonishing. The tactile nature of handling fabrics develops hand-eye coordination and motor skills. Choosing fabric encourages an appreciation of colour and design, promoting creativity and a sense of individuality. And what about understanding that tasks need to be done in a logical order, and the need to have a bucketload of patience?

Completing a sewing project from start to finish fosters a sense of accomplishment that can boost a child’s morale and self-confidence. And it’s really great fun!
