For children, the important of creative skills such as sewing in aiding mental and physical development is astonishing. The tactile nature of handling fabrics develops hand-eye coordination and motor skills. Choosing fabric encourages an appreciation of colour and design, promoting creativity and a sense of individuality. And what about understanding that tasks need to be done in a logical order, and the need to have a bucket load of patience?

Why is sewing a good activity for children?

I learned to use a sewing machine when I was 7 years old.  So I know children can learn to sew when they’re very young. What’s more is they learn faster than adults and retain the information longer. Sewing assists in developing good hand/eye co-ordination, manual dexterity, stimulates the creative imagination and aids in project planning. It gives a sense of achievement and self-worth.   I believe that it’s such an important life skill that all children should learn  – Girls and boys.

However, it’s important that they get suitable sewing lessons.  My sewing lessons for children focus firstly on safety. Then we do some fun exercises to learn how to develop confident machine skills. Easy children’s sewing projects are fun and are a great way to learn basic sewing techniques.

There are only a small number of children in each class so each can receive lots of attention and are carefully supervised.

Artisan Stitch holds a Certificate of Excellence and is rated Best Sewing Classes in Edinburgh.  Winner of the UK Enterprise award in 2020 for Best Sewing Classes. Winner of ‘Best Private Sewing Education & Training provider 2021’. Artisan stitch is also one of only 2 providers in Scotland who are recommended for sewing tuition by Queen Margaret University.

I can advise on buying a sewing machine for children (or yourself!)  Please avoid the mini or midi machines aimed specifically at children.  They are poor quality and don’t have proper features to enable development of any real sewing skills.
