Improve Your Dressmaking in just one day! Without the hassle and expense of making an entire garment, this one day class focuses on the areas that many home dressmakers find tricky.

Do you enjoy dressmaking but aren’t happy with the finish?   Do you have bumps at the bottom of your zips. Or do your facings just refuse to lie flat?  Would you like to improve your dressmaking but don’t have the time to commit to a course? In this class, I’ll share a few techniques you can use to improve the look of your dressmaking. Instead of wrestling with making a whole garment, we’ll concentrate on learning some foundation dressmaking techniques by making samples of each technique.  There are yours to take home for future reference.

Who is this aimed at?

Anyone who has struggled with dressmaking techniques and would like to learn some tips to achieve a better finish to their work. You must be able to use a sewing machine confidently, sew accurate seams, and have some dressmaking experience.

What will I learn?

  • understanding pattern terminology and markings
  • how to choose your best pattern size and achieve a good fit.
  • pressing and trimming techniques
  • why you should staystitch, and how to do it
  • how to apply a facing
  • what is understitching and when do you use it
  • how to insert a concealed zip

If you have ever struggled with any of these techniques, or you wonder why your ‘makes’ look ‘homemade’, then this course will really raise your dressmaking game.

Artisan Stitch has recently won a Certificate of Excellence and is rated ‘Best sewing classes in Edinburgh.  Tutor, Jen has over 40 years sewing experience and over 20 years in a tutoring role.

Course arrangements

All equipment and materials are provided. If you prefer to bring your own sewing machine, then please remember to bring the power cable/foot control, the instruction manual and all accessories.  You will also need a zip foot and a concealed zip foot if you have one.

If you have any particular issues, then please let me know in advance of the class and I’ll try to include it if there’s time.  Please also bring along something you’ve made fairly recently so I can see where you’re at with your sewing, and know how best to help.

Sewing machines provided or bring your own.

If you have any sewing problems other than those mentioned above, then please let me know and I’ll try to cover them during the day if there’s time.
