An Exhibition of Embroidery and Textile Art
Opening morning: Saturday 30th September 10:30am – 1pm
The Embroiderer’s Guild is a registered charity and the Edinburgh Branch has been in existence for over 60 years.
At the moment we have 55 members who come from all walks of life. Their many skills and interests combine to make an active and productive group. We have monthly lectures on embroidery related subjects and organise workshops several times a year with experienced tutors who keep us up to date by sharing with us their techniques and skills.
Within the group over the last year we have had two projects, one finished , one ongoing. The Chairman’s challenge was to embroider a “Flower or two ” to fit into a 9″ frame. We also have ” Travelling Books ” where members chose a subject, worked a piece of embroidery, attached it to a page in the book and then passed it on. The work produced by these two projects reflects the talent and diversity of the members and both had over half the members taking part.
Our other projects are with The National Gallery of Scotland and The Edinburgh College of Art. On the second Wednesday of the month a group from the guild meet in the main gallery of The National Gallery of Scotland. Our remit is to take inspiration from a painting in The Scottish Collection and produce a piece of embroidery. We also have a framed panel with a digital print of a Scottish painting which is being stitched by visitors, encouraged by our members. We meet and chat to people from many countries and find that many of them have an interest in embroidery.
Our project with the Edinburgh College of Art has involved members of the guild exchanging skills with a group of students. We have been shown screen printing and digital design while they have been shown traditional stitches and embroidery techniques. The common ground is an interest in The Needlework Development Scheme and this venture has also been enjoyed by our members.
We also have a Young Embroiderer’s group. Members from the guild meet with the young people once a month and help them produce the most imaginative pieces of work.
