Free-Motion Embroidery

Free-motion embroidery, also known as Free-Machine embroidery, is a useful core skill for Textile Artists, Quilters and Felters. Many of my other creative workshops involve free-motion embroidery so if you’re not sure which one to take, then I recommend this workshop as a starting point. No ‘drawing’ experience is necessary.

Course Description

This workshop will teach you how to use a sewing machine as a creative tool. Whether you want to quilt, create mixed media art, make cards, or embroidery on your clothes, this course will show you a variety of ways to do it.  Free-machine embroidery (or free-hand machine embroidery) can be done on a standard sewing machine and doesn’t need sophisticated equipment. Neither do you need any art or drawing experience.  Find out why Kirsty Allsopp calls this the ‘Crack-cocaine of craft’.

Artisan Stitch won a Certificate of Excellence in January 2019 and is rated ‘best sewing classes in Edinburgh’. This workshop is tutored by Jen Skedd who is a member of the Embroiderers’ Guild and Group Twelve Textile artists. She has exhibited and sold her embroidery work.

Who is this aimed at?

Quilters, Would-be textile artists, dressmakers or crafters looking for something a bit different! You must have sewing machine experience and be able to wind bobbins and thread the machine competently without assistance.

What will I learn?

This workshop aims to teach you the basic techniques of free-machine embroidery:

  • setting up the machine
  • guiding the needle to draw with thread
  • how to obtain a variety of patterns and texture effects
  • use of fabric stabilisers
  • the afternoon project will help you practice, to create a small stitched picture.

Course arrangements

Sewing machines are available but you can bring your own if you wish.  Please remember  your power cable/foot control, bobbins, accessories and instruction manual.  You will need to fit a free-motion/darning foot.
