Fiona Hermse is hosting It Surrounds Me – Part 2, an exhibition of site-specific sculptures, mixed media pieces and paper forms in Gallery 2 of St Margaret’s House.
Part 1 of the project came about during Fiona’s time at ComPeung, an artist residency in Thailand. The experience inspired Fiona to expand the boundaries of her background discipline of art jewellery by creating installations which, in turn, became part of her idyllic surroundings.
The Buddhist philosophies of Thailand, and their relevance within contemporary western society, form the basis of the continuation of her project. In particular, the themes of connection, meditation, ephemerality, compassion and how they relate to our current ecological predicament are the themes underpinning Part 2.
Fiona intends to make these themes visual by creating an immersive experience for the viewer. Aesthetic influences will be taken from various observed natural phenomena, with particular focus on movement. These include “murmurations of starlings, shoals of fish, clouds formations, sunlight in water and fireflies in a dark forest.†The project will also involve written personal accounts.
Fiona is in need of volunteers to help her set up this exhibition. Click here for more information.
