Dressmaking course (3-day Summer School)
This short dressmaking course will teach you how to make your own unique clothes that fit perfectly. This course is suitable for all levels.
If you’re new to making clothes, then I suggest starting with something simple. My pattern suggestion is an easy ‘A-line’ skirt or a simple shift. These projects will teach you how to use a commercial paper pattern, how to sew darts, add a zip, and a waistband or facing. Otherwise pyjamas are a good first project and together with a kimono-style dressing gown, are achievable within the 3 days of the course.
If you’ve had more experience, then you can bring your own choice of project and get help to improve your dressmaking skills.
During this course, I’ll be focussing on teaching technique so your clothes won’t look ‘Homemade’, but ‘Handmade’. No-one will believe you made them yourself.
You should be able to use a sewing machine confidently, have an awareness of basic seams and hems and have had practice making at least one or two craft projects. If you do not, then I recommend you take one of my Beginners courses first.
What will I learn?
I’ll coach you in the following:
>How to choose an appropriate pattern for your level of ability,
>Taking measurements, cutting and fitting the pattern, understanding pattern markings and instructions
>Altering the pattern for a perfect fit
>Sewing tips and techniques to achieve a professional finish
Artisan Stitch won a Certificate of Excellence and is rated ‘Best sewing classes in Edinburgh 2019. They have recently won a UK Enterprise award for Best sewing classes 2020, and Best Private Sewing Education & Training Provider-Scotland. The only Edinburgh sewing classes recommended by Queen Margaret University.
Taught by a lifelong sewist with over 40 years experience across dressmaking, tailoring and bridal wear and over 20 years in a teaching & training role.
A small class size ensures I’m able to give you lots of individual attention. You can choose your own project, and I tailor your tuition accordingly.
You’ll need to bring your own pattern, fabric, matching thread, plus any interfacing, zips/buttons etc which are required to complete your project. You’ll possibly also need calico for making mock-up of the pattern to check the fit, and pattern-making paper. Please bring a basic sewing kit of fabric shears, paper scissors, small sharp embroidery scissors for trimming, tape measure (marked in cm), chalk pencils/fabric marking pens and pins.
Sewing machines are available in the studio if you need one.
