St Margaret’s House is delighted to announce 24, by recent Gray’s School graduate Dominic McIvor. Dominic’s large-scale works are created by repeating a colour sequence (of 24 small squares, hence the title) hundreds of times over, before peeling the canvas to see what remains. He was hand-picked for this year’s Edinburgh Palette Bursary Studio Programme by his department because of the painstaking processes that underpin his impressive visual works.

My current studio work has developed out of an interest in endurance. I noticed that a rhythmic, numerical instructed working method rather than my previous representational approach was producing much more interesting surfaces due to the imperfections created by human error. It was these blemishes that stood out and encouraged me to explore the spontaneous and to exploit the imperfections through drawing. The role of controlled chance within my art practice has been instrumental in bringing my natural responsive accidents into art making and recording the ongoing process. The drawings are game like, setting rules and abiding by them until the game is complete. Despite the guidelines being set out at the beginning of each drawing, the conclusion is always surprising.
