Beginners Sewing Course XL

Beginners Sewing Course XL

Tuesday 27 July - Tuesday 31 August
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The Beginners sewing course XL is an extended version of the classic Beginners sewing course. It is a 6-week evening course, so there’s two extra projects to make. This extra sewing practice makes a huge difference to your sewing skill and confidence.

It is a good starting point to learn expert sewing techniques whether you want to progress into dressmaking, soft furnishing or craft projects. It’s also a great refresher if you’ve not sewn for a while. You’ll learn how to understand sewing machines, get experience of using different stitch types, learning about stitch lengths, widths and tensions. I’ll explain what the different presser feet are for and you’ll learn how to measure and cut fabric.

Femme by Constanza Manescau

Femme by Constanza Manescau

Friday 20 August - Friday 3 September
All Day

This series of photographs shows the female body as it is, wanting it to move away from the culture of the object and sexism. Showing it as a body-temple, denouncing the censorship that continues to instigate the woman’s body to this day. Focusing on the sacredness of the body as a way to aid mental healing.

Constanza Manescau is a photographer, filmmaker, writer and visual artist born in Argentina. She covers several fields within the film industry, such as feature films, documentaries, commercials, music videos. She founded Narval, a creativity and audiovisual studio and won the Emerging Artist Award in Barcelona.

My motor of creation is based on the experimentation of personal and humanitarian existential experiences, representing them through visual art from the points of power of change, the right to life, freedom and expression through art. By way of moving in a psychological-emotional and philosophical way from the fact of being human. Analyzing history at a cultural, sociological and political level to create other paths outside of those established for the evolution and freedom of being. Claiming our rights through reporting and exposing them. Finding myself in a continuous search for different forms of expression such as cinema, photography, video art and interactive installations.

This is an online exhibition only.

Get Creative With Fused Glass

Get Creative With Fused Glass

Saturday 28 August
11:00 am - 4:30 pm

Have you ever tried fusing glass? It is a lot of fun and utterly addictive. In this workshop you will learn how this is done and give it a go. You can make a beautiful glass bowl, a colorful suncatcher or something else that has a personal meaning to you. If you already have basic skills, you can work on your desired project or learn a new technique.
Fusing enables individual pieces of glass to be transformed into a single object when they are put together and exposed to high temperature in a kiln. Depending on the temperature used, different textures and other interesting visual effects can be achieved. Furthermore, placing the glass into a mould or on a prop can produce three-dimensional forms with varying complexity.

In this workshop you will:

• learn the basics of fusing glass
• become skilled in cutting glass and assembling simple forms
• learn how to achieve desired textures and other effects
• design and make your own glass objects to take home

Note that your creations will not be ready at the end of the workshop, but will be available to collect from the studio few days after the workshop, depending on the complexity of the project. All tools and materials will be provided.

The workshop is limited to two participants.

Within & Without

Within & Without

Saturday 28 August - Saturday 11 September
11:00 am - 5:00 pm

This is an exhibition of recent, largely introspective, work by three very different artists who have joined forces to reflect on how they perceive their own emotions and the world around them.

Nicky Beckett has been experimenting with woodcuts and mixed media, including words, to communicate and enforce the idea of the amalgamation between the inner and the outer worlds. Her work depicts faces that reveal complex identity.

Jacki Higgs’s paintings and drawings of the coastline and the sea include swimmers, surfers and brightly coloured beach huts as she observes nature and the life around her. On display are also sketch-books of her journeys.

Irina Stancheva works with kiln-formed glass and her brightly coloured glass pieces are inspired by the natural world – plants, animals, microbes and the change of seasons. The shadows and reflections produced by the glass as light passes through it are also intrinsic part of her work.
