Dressmaking Course - Evenings

Wednesday 19 February - Wednesday 25 March
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

This dressmaking course will teach you how to make your own unique clothes that fit perfectly. Or if you’ve already done a bit of dressmaking, then you can improve your techniques.

Artisan Stitch won a Certificate of Excellence and is rated ‘Best sewing classes in Edinburgh.

I’ve been dressmaking since I was at school. I’ve also studied Bridalwear and Tailoring so I’ve learned lots of tips and tricks that give your projects a polished look. During this course, I’ll be focussing on teaching technique so your clothes won’t look ‘Homemade’, but ‘Handmade’. No-one will believe you made them yourself.

If you’ve already familiar with dressmaking techniques and commercial patterns and you’d like to learn pattern cutting, then you can do this here too.

You should be able to use a sewing machine confidently, have had practice making at least one or two craft projects, and have an awareness of basic seams and hems. If you do not, then I recommend you take one of my Beginners classes first.

What will I learn? I’ll coach you in the following:

>How to choose an appropriate pattern for your level of ability,
>Taking measurements, cutting and fitting the pattern, understanding pattern markings and instructions
>Altering the pattern for a perfect fit
>Sewing tips and techniques to achieve a professional finish

Taught by a lifelong sewist with over 40 years experience across dressmaking, tailoring and bridal wear and over 20 years in a teaching & training role.

Beginners Sewing Course XL

Thursday 20 February - Thursday 26 March
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Beginners sewing course XL is an extended version of the classic Beginners sewing course. It is a 6-week evening course, so there’s two extra projects to make. This extra sewing practice makes a huge difference to your sewing skill and confidence.

It is a good starting point to learn expert sewing techniques whether you want to progress into dressmaking, soft furnishing or craft projects. It’s also a great refresher if you’ve not sewn for a while. You’ll learn how to understand sewing machines, get experience of using different stitch types, learning about stitch lengths, widths and tensions. I’ll explain what the different presser feet are for and you’ll learn how to measure and cut fabric.

Sewing With Knits

Thursday 27 February
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Sewing knit fabric with a domestic sewing machine can be tricky. But it’s really easy with an overlocker. Many people who have overlockers only use them to neaten the edges of their work but they can do so much more. This short class will show you how to construct a garment, in this case a versatile tunic, almost entirely on an overlocker. I designed this tunic/dress myself as I couldn’t find anything I liked in the shops. It’s a style I’ve since made over and over. I now have about 5 of them in varying lengths. It’s an easy-to-wear, easy to wash item that has become a staple of my wardrobe and I can’t be without.
