A great artist, Robert Calquhoun once said in relation to painting ‘Keep it simple and do it with love’. I strive, often unsuccessfully to keep it simple and do it with love but my painting is all about the inner life in preference to the external. In one sense, of course all art is inner if it works at all. It is all a searching, as it occurs to the painter, an expression of truth to the subject. I value the poetic and the lyrical in painting and life and consider life itself to be an affirmation and a blessing, something to be nurtured and cherished while also being utterly painful and impossible at times. My work can reflect something of this darker side but I hope also has beauty and irony and humour in the mix.
This new show called “Re—member—ing” is about the way in which the body carries memory. We remember through sensation and feeling as well as mind. These oils and drawings are memories in this sense of being pictorial sensations of felt life in the artist.

This is a joint exhibition of work produced by Jacqui Higgs and Aileen Paton.
The opening of this exhibition is on the 9th of November between 7pm and 9pm, we hope to see you there.
Jacqui Higgs SSA: is an Edinburgh based, Dublin born artist. Many of the drawings and paintings I am showing have been developed from recent visits to Kirkudbright and the nearby location of the remote Greensands. Salvaged materials, structured surfaces and storm damage debris occasionally enter into the pieces (done in situ), (small glimpses of screen prints can be seen under some of the work). Paintings from a residency in Portugal (2018) and Majorca also included for this exhibition.
AAPaton: My work focuses on the twin concepts of palimpsest and erasure, using newspapers and other publications. My technique begins with a process of reduction and redaction, excising most , but not all text and images so that only the basic scaffolding of a newspaper remains leaving only a trace of its original form.
