ewa droga ikonyWeekly classes will continue to run after Christmas in the Edinburgh School of Icon Painting, with similar flexibility so you can join any time (or you can make up time further down the line if you miss one or two classes).

We start in the week commencing 6th of January.

Tuesdays 10.30am – 1.30pm
Thursdays 5.30pm – 8.30 pm

New students have been coming to classes and workshops over the last few months. It has been very inspiring and challenging. People with different experience and expectations. Offering a choice of images as inspirations students create their own painting which are either very traditional or contemporary, religious or non religious.
The goal is to learn egg tempera technique and find inspiration in iconography with it’s very unique aesthetic. Students can use images of icons or other images to create their own compositions.

You will learn and explore:

  • composition used in icon painting,
  • icon styles including Byzantine and Russian,
  • how to prepare egg yolk binding medium,
  • make your own paints from dry pigments,
  • how to work with thin layers,
  • egg tempera brush work,
  • dry brush work.

You will be encouraged to experiment with the technique and colour. Tradition is something dynamic so it’s still grooving and changing.  Your ideas and contemporary approach welcome.

The block of 10, 3-hour sessions should be enough to complete an icon and costs £235.

Classes will run throughout the year so don’t worry if you miss few sessions at the beginning – you still will be able to make 10 sessions.  Students will be working at their own pace and the tuition will be adjusted to the individual needs of the students.
