News Community News Watercolour workshop with Aine Divine

Lake in African DressOn this 2 day workshop we’ll look at ways of representing the portrait head in the medium of water colour, while working from direct observation of the model. The focus will be on capturing the general shapes that make up the head and shoulders, on being attentive from beginning to end and making fresh marks as you make fresh discoveries.

I will demonstrate how the features can be broken down into simple shapes. The emphasis will be on finding the position of the eyes, nose and mouth before doing any detailed work there. We will also look at how the medium of water colour can be exploited to allow the features to emerge gradually as part of the face rather than seem to be applied on top.

We will explore colour mixing, and which colour combinations best convey light and shade on the skin.

I’ll demonstrate the many uses of the flat one inch brush, from blocking in wide areas of tone, to defining edges. I’ll explain how you can lift off, wash away, flood parts with colour, and draw with the brush over dry paint, in order to best convey what you are seeing. You will also be encouraged to tilt the board to make use of runs and drips.

The course will be punctuated by regular demonstrations, focusing on responding intuitively to the subject and finding ways to make the most of any ‘accidents’ that occur. Everyone will be encouraged to stand back often, to keep looking and to keep active. All the time remembering to relax and breathe!
