Bonkers!

Exhibition runs 20-25 August Open daily 10am-6pm
Whitespace Gallery 76 East Crosscauseway EH8 9HQ

Preview 19 August 6-9pm with a performance by Heather Lee Evans on the opening night. This is a free event.

Abigail Smith, Clare Robertson, Freddie Thomas, Joan Stack and Roween Suess present an exhibition examining the different notions of Bonkers; inviting the viewer to join in a celebration of escapism, the hallucinatory; to lose your mind in art. The work spans a breadth of mediums and takes its form through installation, performance, artwriting, film, photography and print.

The modern world offers repetitionism, the banal, mental ill health and reconfigured dystopias on loop. Work commitments, family pressures and financial responsibilities monopolize life, Western society is pre-occupied with status and image. We must fit in, we must identify ourselves within the stereotypes demanded of us.

Let’s all go Bonkers!

“I try to be bonkers everyday, what I have found is it is fun, freeing and a total luxury. When I’m in Bonkersville I’m not thinking in the past or to the future, I’m grounded in the now” Freddie Thomas Barmy, ape, bats in belfry, batty, berserk, cracked, crazed, cuckoo, daft, delirious, demented, deranged, dingy, dippy, erratic, flaky, flipped, fruity, idiotic, screwy, silly, untouched, unglued, unhinged, unzipped, wacky, insane, kooky, lunatic, mad, mad as a March hare, mad as a hatter, maniacal, mental, moonstruck, nuts, nutty, potty, psycho. “This exhibition is a lot of fun but there’s an important message here, going a little bit crazy, losing ourselves – ultimately it’s good for our mental health” Clare Robertson There is an open call for three Bonkers performance acts to take on an evening slot.
